Paul Barrett has been appointed independent chairperson of the National Basketball Referees Association (NBRA), succeeding Jim Dudley after three years in the role, a transition that matters to institute professionals as officiating bodies across Irish sport confront a worsening retention crisis. Barrett previously chaired Neptune Basketball Club, the Organisation of National League Clubs and the National League Committee, stepping down from national league roles in 2024.

NBRA is the referees committee of Basketball Ireland, the national governing body for basketball in Ireland, established in 2022 to oversee referee development and administration across the sport.

The appointment lands amid a structural officiating shortage affecting Irish sport broadly, not just basketball.

County boards across multiple GAA codes have warned of fixture disruption due to a shrinking pool of referees, with rising abuse of match officials cited as a driver of early dropout among new recruits, according to the Irish Examiner. Mayo LGFA has separately moved to appoint a dedicated referee support coordinator to reduce early attrition among new officials.

Barrett said, "I'd like to praise the work done by Jim Dudley since the formation of the NBRA in 2022. I look forward to working with my fellow committee members on NBRA, the Local Area Boards and Basketball Ireland to help deliver what is set out in Basketball Ireland's Strategic Plan. We shall keep striving to increase the number of referees, in tandem with promoting referee development." Basketball Ireland training and performance manager Paul Dempsey said, "We are thrilled to welcome Paul Barrett to the NBRA team as the independent chairperson. Paul brings a wealth of experience and leadership."

For the sector, appointing a chair with cross-committee governance experience, rather than a purely refereeing background, signals that officiating bodies increasingly need administrative depth to manage recruitment pressures. For the sector's volunteer-dependent structures specifically, continuity in leadership matters more when the underlying supply of officials is shrinking across codes.

Whether NBRA's recruitment ambitions can outpace the attrition already visible elsewhere in Irish sport will be the clearer test of this leadership handover.
