Michael Kavanagh, CEO of the Compliance Institute Ireland, the professional body for compliance practitioners in Ireland, has been appointed Deputy Chair of the International Federation of Compliance Associations (IFCA) and elected Vice President of Chartered Accountants Ireland, taking on dual senior governance roles across two major professional associations simultaneously.

Business Plus reported the appointments, with Kavanagh's election as Vice President of Chartered Accountants Ireland confirmed by fellow council members at the body's AGM, and his appointment as Deputy Chair of IFCA confirmed by the federation's own networks, with IFCA CEO Rianne Potgieter publicly acknowledging both roles.

IFCA is the global umbrella organisation for professional compliance bodies, founded in Dublin in 2010, with membership comprising national compliance associations from across the world. It operates as a not-for-profit federation whose membership is open only to not-for-profit associations and professional bodies with a primary focus on the promotion of compliance and ethics and the career development of their members.

Kavanagh said of his IFCA appointment: "Compliance continues to play a critical role in building trust, integrity, and resilience across organisations globally. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to IFCA's important work and to collaborate with colleagues from around the world."

As Deputy Chair of IFCA, Kavanagh is expected to succeed to the chair in due course, following the federation's established leadership progression model. His appointment strengthens the Irish compliance sector's standing within the global federation, given that IFCA was itself founded in Dublin and the Compliance Institute Ireland is a founding member organisation.

Chartered Accountants Ireland, founded in 1888, is the largest and oldest professional body of accountants on the island of Ireland, with almost 40,000 members across the island and internationally. Kavanagh's election as vice president positions him to take on the presidency in a subsequent cycle, consistent with the body's established succession structure.

The combination of roles positions Kavanagh at the intersection of Irish and international association governance at a time when compliance and regulatory frameworks are becoming increasingly central to how professional bodies serve their members and engage with policymakers across multiple sectors.
