GPA seeks major boost in intercounty player grants ahead of budget talks

The Gaelic Players Association (GPA) is set to call for an increase in annual player grants from €1,400 to €2,500 in pre-budget discussions this week, a move that could raise total payments to intercounty GAA players from €5.6 million to €10 million.

The proposal, which would cover around 4,000 male and female athletes, is rooted in findings from an independent Indecon report that estimated intercounty players collectively generate €591 million in economic value each year—despite each incurring average personal losses of €4,602 to participate at the highest level.

The report highlights inflation-driven pressures on travel and nutrition costs, with reimbursement rates stagnant since 2018. As a result, players are reportedly €1,499 worse off than they were seven years ago. The GPA argues that the grant increase would help offset these rising expenses while recognising the wider contribution of Gaelic games to Ireland’s economy and culture.

Male intercounty players currently receive roughly €3 million in grants annually, while female players share €2.6 million—though many women divert a portion to cover team costs, reducing their personal benefit. The GPA has also renewed discussions around tax relief measures for intercounty players, which remain complex due to the GAA’s amateur status.

The proposed increase could mark a turning point in how player welfare and financial sustainability are addressed within Gaelic games.
