The Guild of Agricultural Journalists of Ireland, the all-island professional body supporting journalists, editors, and public relations and marketing professionals working in the agricultural sector, has elected Tom Morrow as its new president, following his formal ratification at the guild's annual general meeting held on 25 June 2026.
Agriland reported that Morrow, a Northern Ireland-based journalist, succeeds Matt O'Keeffe, whose three-year term as president concluded at the AGM. O'Keeffe was praised by Morrow for his work during that period, with Morrow describing him as having represented members in a professional manner.
Morrow brings a career spanning more than five decades to the role. He graduated from Queen's University Belfast in 1970 with a degree in agriculture before completing a doctorate in agricultural economics in 1974. He subsequently held roles in the fertiliser industry and at Northern Ireland's Milk Marketing Board, where he eventually became production director, before entering agricultural journalism in 2001.
Commenting on his election, Morrow said: "I'm very happy, very honoured. Quite astounded actually to have got to this stage in my career, my rather long career, but very, very pleased to take up the position."
On the guild's mission, Morrow said: "I think we need to represent our members. We need to make sure they're in the right place at the right time, dealing with the right people, to put agriculture front and foremost in the minds of politicians and people in positions of authority, people who have got some degree of control over agriculture and the agricultural sector. I look forward to representing the guild, the members, with those sorts of people."
Morrow also acknowledged the challenge of the role, noting that while he now writes less frequently than earlier in his career, he continues to contribute regularly each week, reflecting the guild's ethos of active engagement with agricultural media across the island.
The election reinforces the guild's all-island character, with a Northern Ireland-based president now leading an organisation that represents agricultural media professionals from both sides of the border, at a time when coverage of farming, food policy, and rural affairs carries growing significance for both jurisdictions.
