The Irish Football Association (Irish FA), Northern Ireland's national football governing body, has elected Colin McKendry as its new president following the association's Annual General Meeting, succeeding Conrad Kirkwood who served in the role from 2021 to 2026.
The Belfast Telegraph reported that McKendry, a highly respected figure within Northern Ireland football, has served on the Irish FA Board since 2021 and most recently held the position of Second Deputy President. He has also served as the Board's Anti-Doping Champion and played an active role in supporting the development and governance of football across Northern Ireland.
Away from the Irish FA, McKendry served as chairman of Coleraine FC for 14 years before stepping aside earlier this year, and also holds the position of vice chairman of the Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL), representing Coleraine FC on the Premiership Management Committee.
McKendry said: "It is a tremendous honour and privilege to be appointed President of the Irish Football Association. Football has been a central part of my life for many years, and I am proud to have served the game in a variety of roles. I look forward to working alongside the Board, staff, clubs and stakeholders across Northern Ireland as we continue to grow and strengthen our game. There is much to be optimistic about, from participation and facilities development to the continued progress of our international teams. I am excited about the opportunities ahead and committed to supporting football at every level."
Patrick Nelson, chief executive of the Irish FA, said: "Colin has given outstanding service to football over many years and brings experience, passion and commitment. I look forward to working with him and wish him every success during his term as President."
McKendry will be joined on the executive team by Maurice Johnston from the Mid Ulster Football Association as First Deputy President and David Morrow from the County Antrim Football Association as Second Deputy President.
The election reinforces the Irish FA's established practice of drawing presidential candidates from those with deep experience across the association's governance structures, with McKendry's progression from board member to Second Deputy President to President reflecting a defined leadership development pathway within the organisation.
